abstract = "Net radiation and its components are critical variables to
estimate water losses by vegetated surfaces. Therefore, they are
relevant in the planning of agricultural activities such as
sugarcane cultivation. This study aimed to estimate the albedo and
surface energy fluxes in S{\~a}o Paulo state and evaluate the
behaviour of the radiation balance in sugarcane expansion areas in
the crop years 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. MODIS/Aqua data acquired
at two dates (23/08/2006 and 16/08/2007) and the SEBAL model were
used in this evaluation. Air temperature was measured at the
agroclimatological station of S{\~a}o Carlos, located in the
central-eastern part of S{\~a}o Paulo state. The MODIS/Aqua
products were: reflectance and surface temperature (MYD09GQ,
MYD09GA and MYD11A1). The sugarcane expansion from 2006 to 2007
was mapped by the Canasat Project. In general, the data estimated
by the SEBAL model responded to the land use change and the
rainfall intensity observed prior to the satellite data
acquisitions. Moreover, the values obtained for the sugarcane
areas were consistent with observational studies conducted in the
state of S{\~a}o Paulo in similar periods. The results indicate
that the methodology has potential for studies involving water
availability for crop growth suggesting the use of a larger number
of remote sensing images to cover a broader range of sugarcane
                         growth stages.",
